yeats

I really enjoyed reading the works of Yeats this week . i think my favorite poem was Sailing to Byzantium. First of all its a cool title. From the collective work of Yeats, I think it is safe to say that Yeats is not to found of aging and often pondered Death and therefor is own mortality and immortality of his work. In this piece particular he speaks of the ills of aging in the beginning and then moves to the notion that for the aged its best to get out of town to die. As far as the comparison to art and immortality he draws a direct comparison to his own work as another form of art , the golden statue, this is an interesting notion since statues of greek and roman and egyption artist are still today some of the oldest remain pieces of art, and making the statue gold only adds to its ability to age , gold is a metal that does not have great electronegativaty, which means is does not corrode easy and lasts a long time, and the staying power of gold would have been know at that time, which of course adds to its vaule.

Goblin Market

Hey gang it has been a rough week, I've been sick, but here it goes.I have really enjoyed reading Great expectations by Charels Dickens. This novel makes great statements on the levels of soceity. I think what I enjoyed the most was the required reading of Goblin Market.I think that the poem definetly supports women empowerment because the sisters do truimph over the goblins, by Lizzie' s will power that is driven by her love for her sister. Laura crumbles to the gobblins where Lizzie stands strong and refuses to pull lip form lip to taste the juice of the fruit of the goblin men, but does put herself in peril to retrieve the juice for her sister, a very loving action. This breaks the spell of the goblin men that had been cast over laura for tasting the fruit. What the goblins represent is clearly a male orientated or the goblins would not specificly be men. To me to say the goblins represents male dominance of the times is a fairly easy reach, I think we can be more specific, and sense there is a feeling of addiction or dependcy with the decline of laura after tasting the fruit, explore what calls to women that which they would depend on men, to make them powerless' and to me that would, maybe because I am a modern American, be a dependeny of monatary stature. Though this poem does have sexual undertones, anytime one talks about juices of fruit ,i think calls up those undertones, ni our modern soceity, maybe Robert Plant had a bit to do with that , but Led Zepplin was not around then and the representations of fruit in the bible are not sexual in nature , insted that of empowerment and knowledge. so maybe, it's not money but men's knowledge that is the secert fruit.

The Forsaken Merman

I really enjoyed this poem. I totally agree with the message about religion constraining the imagination. It is also interesting if you look form the perpesctive of the cult factor of religion, or how a belief can become so strong that it can consume an indiviual, or shadow the rest of their being . This comes to me when reading about how the mermaid can no longer hear the call of her childeren. I mean thats pretty powerful, don't you think??

gett n the groove

I think I have finally got the groove or pace for this class. My team seems to be a good one, and eager to work ! The reading for this class is intense but do-able.I hope everyone is having a good semster and everyones project goes well. I think thr reading i enjoyed the most this wee kwas the rhyme of the anceint mariner. To answer why did the mariner shhot the albetross, to me answers the main theme of the story ; It seems to me that the mariner shoots the albatross because he lacks love and respect for God's creatures. As far as getting inside the head of the mariner at the moment that he shoots the bird, I don't know, and don't think thats what was asked , but if I was to guess I would say it was probably , "stupid birb, I hates me a bird" lol. As far as his lack of faith or graditude for the curse, or power of the omen, or ultimately the power of God I think that all falls under his lack of love and respect for God's creatures. I'm not seeing the rest of that stuff, not like everyone else.

TEAM PROJECT

HAS anyone thought about their team project yet? I suppose I am going to ask around . I am ready to get the project done and over with. I had to narrow my focus a great deal with the first paper .I ended up writing only a fraction of what I first thought . I really enjoyed Frankenstein I think many a mesage can be pulled from this story-- but to focus on a main message and to break it down in simplest terms I think the old --DO unto others as you would have them do unto you -- states alot. This touches on seperation of peoples on all basis -- class, apperance, or stature of Greatness. Putting the theme in simple terms to me is one way that the story transends time periods. It is an all time great theme and story --Shelley weaves and twists this theme touching on contemperary issues for her time, but leaving this overall simple theme for us to take with us-- that will always be an issue, due to the nature of man.
